Objective : This study aimed to scope review previous studies on community-based dysphagia, and identifying the status of dysphagia screening and assessment tools in community settings.
Methods : Journal articles related to community-based dysphagia from 2011 to 2021 were searched in PubMed, ProQuest, Embase, and RISS. Search words used were community based dysphagia, screening, assessment, elderly, community dwelling elderly, dementia.
Results : A total of 66 journals were analyzed, with 51 screening and assessment tools identified. The purposes of study were dysphagia assessment development and validation, to determine dysphagia prevalence and its relationship with other areas, and the effect of oral motor therapy. Most subjects were community-dwelling older adults, and community-dwelling adults, older adults, and patients with dementia were included. The EAT-10, comprehensive, self-report questionnaire, and water swallowing tests such V-VST were the most common, and oral motor, nutrition, oral health, activities of daily living, medication, and QOL were also.
Conclusion : Dysphagia is a lifelong problem and subjects in community settings are more diverse, including the older adults and those with dementia. Community settings differ from medical settings, so choice of appropriate, validated screening and assessment tools, as well as proper dysphagia interventions, are necessary in community settings.
